Our little family doesn’t have many traditions just yet. We are pretty low-key about holidays, and we’re still creating our own rituals for celebrations. Matthew is admittedly superstitious though, so it was important to have a traditional New Year’s meal for luck and prosperity. His grandmother and my mother both called in the morning to make sure we were eating black-eyed peas, pork, and cabbage (oh, and to wish us a Happy New Year.) We didn’t have all of the foods at the time, but we fixed that with a quick trip to the grocery. Good luck and prosperity to us!
Matthew inherited another New Year’s superstition from his grandmother that he takes quite literally…Whatever you do on New Year’s Day, you’ll do for the rest of the year. So if you argue, for instance, that sets a tone for the year. His superstition reminded me to be mindful, something I do hope to practice all year. Otherwise, we had no agenda for the day but to enjoy each other’s company. And we did. We hope to continue that throughout 2009 and for all of our years.
And I added this year that if you eat chicken it will run off with your money. :D
